The 'EITHER/OR' project entails a focus on the deterministic element of art making by producing hundreds of thousands of hand drawn figures that will serve as reference markers. What is meant by 'Reference Markers' is that the figure is to be viewed as a neurological mapping of my brain's activity within this narrowed format. The project will span my lifetime, with all other urges towards creativity to be suspended to preserve the integrity of the project (Aesthetic abstinence). There are 80,000 figures set aside for this project.Figures are produced daily and conditions surrounding the production are documented, such as time: stop/start(am/pm) location (subway), date ect. *I have injected the element of Christianity into my work process to highlight the contrast between my belief in a scientific determinism as opposed to a religious free will. The curtain opens to the metaphorical stage in which the philosophical aspect of Kierkegaard's 'Either/Or' is the main setting and the image content of the either/or canvases are the actors/action. Choice and commitment are a major component in this mortal play. WB - Fall 2008 |
